SLEEP

Nap transitions: when to drop to 2 naps, and when to drop to 1

A baby who used to nap like clockwork suddenly starts fighting one nap, or nighttime sleep falls apart with no clear cause. Before assuming something broke, it's worth checking whether they're in the middle of a nap transition — one of the schedule changes that throws parents off the most, because it doesn't announce itself ahead of time.

The signs matter more than the age

Age is only a reference point — the real signal is in behavior, held for several days in a row, not a single off day:

  • Fights one specific nap — almost always the last one of the day, not the first.
  • Takes much longer than usual to fall asleep for that nap, even when clearly tired.
  • Bedtime keeps creeping later, because the last nap is now interfering with night sleep instead of helping it.
  • Wakes up energetic, not tired, after a short nap — a sign that nap isn't needed anymore.

Dropping from 3 naps to 2

This usually happens between 6 and 9 months, when the late-afternoon nap starts being the most troublesome. The change is often gradual: that third nap shrinks on its own before disappearing entirely.

Dropping from 2 naps to 1

This is the most talked-about transition, and the one that raises the most questions — it usually happens between 12 and 18 months, with quite a bit of variation from baby to baby. Here the challenge is different: you need to stretch the awake time between morning and the single midday nap, which at first leaves the baby overtired before that nap and afternoons longer than they're used to.

Why sleep gets worse before it settles

During the transition it's common to see split nights, earlier wake-ups, or short, irregular naps — the body is resettling the entire day's sleep distribution, not just dropping one nap. This rough patch usually lasts one to three weeks. It's not a sign something went wrong or a reason to rush back to the old schedule.
