Newborn grunting in sleep: why it happens and when to check with a doctor

Grunts, snuffles, a soft little snore — a sleeping newborn's sound repertoire can catch you off guard the first time you really listen at 3am. The good news: in the vast majority of cases, it's completely normal.

Why newborns are so "noisy" while sleeping

Two things explain most of these sounds. First, a newborn's airways are very narrow — air moving through such a small space naturally makes more noise than in an adult. Second, the digestive system is still maturing: gas and mild reflux are common in the first weeks, and cause grunting as the baby processes what they ate, even while asleep.

On top of that, they breathe almost exclusively through the nose in the first months, so any tiny bit of congestion (even from a dry heated room) shows up much more in the sound.

Normal sounds vs. warning signs

Normal: occasional grunts, nasal snuffles, a soft, sporadic snore, sounds that come and go with no fixed pattern, especially during active (REM) sleep.

Check with your pediatrician if you notice:

  • Loud, constant snoring, night after night.
  • Pauses in breathing you notice while they sleep.
  • Visible effort to breathe — skin pulling in between the ribs or below the neck with each inhale.
  • Bluish color around the lips, tongue, or mouth.
  • The sounds come with fever or your baby generally seems unwell.

When it usually gets better

For most babies, the "noisy period" of sleep noticeably decreases between 3 and 6 months, as the airways widen a bit and the digestive system finishes maturing. There's nothing special to do to "speed it up" — it's simply part of development.

What about coughing while asleep?

A mild, occasional cough, especially right at lying down or waking up, falls in the same bucket as grunts and snuffles — narrow airways clearing mucus or mild reflux. What's worth watching more closely is a cough that's persistent through the whole night, especially with wheezing, fever, or the same visible breathing effort mentioned above — that's no longer just "noisy sleep."

When does snoring stop being normal?

If it's loud and constant, comes with pauses in breathing, or visible effort to breathe, check with your pediatrician.

At what age do babies usually stop being so noisy while sleeping?

Generally, it noticeably decreases between 3 and 6 months.
